Special Olympics

History

The Special Olympics of Maryland is a non-profit organization based in Columbia, Maryland. Its mission is to provide athletic training and competition for those with intellectual disabilities through Olympic-type sports.

Those eight years and older who participate are given the chance to develop both physical fitness as well as courage and character with the hope of being brought into the larger society as accepted and respected individuals.

These athletes are given the opportunity to find joy in the sharing of skills and friendships with not only other athletes, but also families and members of the community as well.

Our Participation

UMBC Alpha Sigs participate in the special Olympics by volunteering their time through local organizations, the polar bear plunge and Hula Hoop for Hope.

In the polar bear plunge sisters donate and participate in the plunge.

Hula Hoop for Hope is UMBC's Alpha Sigs 12-hour fundraiser for Special Olympics, which includes bake sale, pieing a sister and raffles.
